Principal Responsibilities Include

As a part of the VDC Engineer Job Description, the following are the most essential job responsibilities of a VDC engineer.

  • Expert in reading Site Civil and landscape design drawings.
  • Develop detailed models based upon Civil drawings for Site utilities like – Storm systems, Water systems, etc., and Site grading like – roads, curbs, sidewalks, etc.
  • Ability to perform various Quality Checks on the Models to validate models for aspects like Model completeness
  • Alignment based on design model and design documents.
  • Model sanity: checking duplication of data, errors and omissions, continuity of systems between the different points of connection.Constructability
  • Perform Model-based coordination amongst different building systems using tools like
  • Clash Detection in Navisworks.
  • Run BIM-enabled coordination meetings between different trades (Site utilities, Structure, and Site elements). Produce clash detection reports to notify the coordination team.

Education Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Civil Engineering, Mechanical, Architecture, Construction Management, or closely related field.
  • (or) Diploma in Civil Engineering with five years of experience or higher, of which a minimum of 2 years should be onsite.
  • At least two years of experience in AutoCAD Civil 3D Modeling.
  • 2+ years experience in 3D AutoCAD based products (AutoCAD architecture, AutoCAD CIVIL 3D)
  • 2+ years of experience in Navisworks management.
  • Knowledge of construction management issues
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent listening skills and strong communication skills.

Typical work environment

Most VDC engineers work both in offices as well as in the field. You will be at a computer, on the phone, or emailing clients, which involves repetitive wrist motions in the office. 

When lending onsite support to architects and clients, you will likely be in and around large industrial equipment and will need to be able to use the proper protective gear for safety. This job includes lifting, standing, bending, and reaching. Typically, VDC Engineers work from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., but they may work overtime.
