India’s operational metro and regional rapid transit network reached approximately 1,159 kilometres across 26 cities as of June 2026, including the Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat RRTS. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs allocated ₹30,942 crore for metro rail in the FY 2026–27 Budget. Why this sector is creating jobs. India’s AC substation capacity stood at 1,428 GVA as of April 2026 and HVDC capacity at 33,500 MW. Peak electricity demand hit an all-time high of 268 GW on 25 May 2026. The National Electricity Plan projects more than 191,000 circuit km of transmission lines and 1,270 GVA of transformation capacity to be added between 2022–23 and 2031–32, alongside 33 GW of new HVDC bi-pole links.
