Construction projects require the use of heavy machinery and equipment to excavate, grade, lift, transport, and manipulate materials. The type of heavy equipment required depends on the specific construction application and phase of the project. Below is an overview of the most common types of heavy construction equipment and their uses.
Table of Contents
Excavators
Excavators, also called diggers, are versatile heavy equipment that consist of a cab, boom, stick, bucket, and attachment. They are used extensively on construction sites for excavation, digging trenches, material handling, demolition, and more. Different types of buckets and attachments like breakers, grapples, and augers can be equipped to expand the functionality of the excavator. Hydraulic excavators are powered by diesel or electric motors.
Bulldozers
Bulldozers, sometimes called crawlers, feature a front-mounted wide flat blade designed to push and redistribute large amounts of soil, sand, rubble, etc. The tracks on bulldozers allow them to manoeuvre through rough terrain. Bulldozers have great ground-holding capacity and are mainly used to loosen densely packed materials, level land, and clear debris or vegetation from sites to prepare them for construction.
Loaders
Loaders, also referred to as front-end loaders or bucket loaders, are an essential piece of earthmoving equipment on construction sites. They consist of a front-mounted bucket connected to a two-part articulating arm and a cab mounted on the rear. Loaders are used to transfer loose materials like dirt, demolition debris, snow, etc. into their bucket and move it around the site. Their high weight and substantial counterweight provide load stability.
Backhoes
A backhoe loader combines a tractor with a front-mounted bucket loader and a back-mounted backhoe. The backhoe features a bucket connected to a two-part articulated arm for digging and moving material. Backhoes can dig precisely and deeply. They allow easy transportation of materials from the excavation site to trucks for disposal. Backhoes are very versatile and can also be used for grading, trenching, breaking asphalt, and even forestry work with additional attachments.
Forklifts
Forklifts are powered industrial trucks used to lift and transport materials over short distances. They come in different sizes and capacities and run on diesel, gasoline, propane or electricity. Lisman Forklifts have machinery with two pronged forks on the front that slide beneath cargo and lift it. On construction sites, forklifts haul bricks, tools, lumber, pipes, and more around the site and load them onto trucks and scaffolds. Rough terrain forklifts can operate on uneven surfaces and inclines. Forklifts enhance productivity and efficiency. Smaller forklifts, such as used order pickers are more commonly used in warehouses.
Cranes
Tower cranes, crawler cranes, and mobile cranes are essential for lifting and moving heavy construction materials and equipment around sites. Cranes come in many sizes for different load capacities. They efficiently hoist steel beams, buckets of concrete, HVAC equipment, and more up to great heights. Cranes provide temporary access for construction work to proceed rapidly. They must be operated by qualified crane operators. Overhead safety is crucial on sites with cranes.
Heavy equipment like excavators, bulldozers, cranes, and forklifts are invaluable on construction sites. They allow projects to be completed safely, efficiently, and rapidly. Companies should utilise the appropriate heavy machinery for each construction phase and application. Proper operation and maintenance is key to maximising productivity while minimising accidents and hazards on a build site. Safety training for equipment operators is a must.
