Many people today prefer metal roofs to traditional shingle roofs. Since metal roofs are more expensive to install, do they offer any real advantages? What roofing materials are there, and what are their benefits and drawbacks?
Standing Seam Metal Roofs
Metal is a great, increasingly popular choice. While roofing installers will charge more to install a metal roof, it may last for the rest of your life. While standard asphalt shingles have to be replaced, a metal roof lasts for many decades.
A standing seam metal roof consists of panels that are locked together at the seams. It isn’t easy for rain, heat, cold, or snow to damage a standing seam metal roof.
While the heat and cold will make the metal expand and contract, that won’t damage it. The metal panels are designed to expand and contract without weakening.
A metal roof can last for 30, 50, or even 75 years. Consider metal if you have just had a roof survey and need new shingles. In the long run, metal might not be more expensive.
Metal Shingles
Some people dislike the appearance of metal panel roofs but like how they last. You might prefer the appearance of a metal shingle roof to a standing seam metal roof.
Roofs with steel or aluminum shingles last for 30 or 50 years. They look similar to asphalt shingles.
Wood Shingles
Wood shingles are a good choice if you like the appearance and can afford them. A wood roof is neither cheap nor very long-lasting, so it is not for everyone. Many people prefer the look of a wood shingle roof to any other kind. The advantage is in the appearance.
Asphalt Composite Shingles
Asphalt shingles are the common, standard choice. The advantage is that they are cheap, much cheaper than wood or metal. A lot of the time, asphalt shingles can last for 20 or 30 years. You can get the shingles on a small part of your roof repaired rather than replace all of them.
Clay or Concrete Tile
Clay tile is unusual, interesting, very long-lasting, and expensive. It can last for more than a century, so you will never need to replace your roof, and it will last for generations.
If the climate is hot and salty, that will not damage a clay tile roof like it will damage some other roofs. Clay tile roofs are significantly more expensive than metal and not only shingle roofs.
You can also get concrete tile, which is almost as expensive as clay tile is. Concrete tiles are very resistant to strong winds. Slate shingles are another option if you want a very long-lasting, expensive, good-looking roofing material.
Get Your Roof Fixed Sooner Rather than Later
If your roof has problems, don’t hesitate to get them fixed. Even if it is difficult to afford repairs right now, you might have to prioritize them.
A leaky roof can wreck your whole house. Water will get inside the walls, leading to mold, which costs a fortune to remove. You could end up with a ruined house that you can’t sell.
Getting your roof repaired will do more than make your house look better. It will prevent damage to your home and increase your home’s value.
