Ministry of Urban Development predicts an average city speed of 6 to 8 KMPH by 2030, which is the speed of a morning walker if urban transport is not properly planned and developed now.
The present transport facilities are incompetent to handle everyday demands. Gridlocks and congestion are routine now; they result in wastage of manpower, fossil fuels, increase pollution and act as dampeners to economic development. Metro rail connectivity is the solution to get rid of these problems.
The traffic noises force people to spend time on the road which they would otherwise spend with their friends and families. Further road development is very limited owing to geographical and demographical limitations. Therefore alternate modes of urban mass transport and multi-modal integration have to be planned.
Accessing jobs, education, livelihoods and other social needs from the outskirts into the business center of the city would become less time-consuming and quality of life will increase for the urban population.
The average citizen would get a reliable, safe, economical, comfortable, user-friendly and punctual mode of transport at affordable rates.
Metro Rail – Rapid Transit system in India:
There is currently 10 operational rapid transit (also called ‘metro’) systems in ten cities in India As of October 2018, India has 507 kilometers (315 miles) of operational metro lines and 381 stations. A further 500+ km of lines are under construction. Metro rail lines in India are composed mainly of the standard gauge.
Projects like the Kolkata Metro and Delhi Metro used the broad gauge for their earliest lines but all new projects in India are on the standard gauge as rolling stock imported is of standard gauge.
The first rapid transit system in India is Kolkata Metro, which started operations in 1984. The Delhi Metro has the largest network in the entire country. The newest metro opened in Hyderabad Metro on 29 November 2017.
In 2006, the National Urban Transport Policy proposed the construction of a metro rail system in every city with a population of 20 lakh (2 million).
On 11 August 2014, Union Government announced that it would provide financial assistance, for the implementation of a metro rail system, to all Indian cities having a population of more than 1 million. In May 2015, the Union Government approved the Union Urban Development Ministry’s proposal to implement metro rail systems in 50 cities.
The majority of the planned projects will be implemented through special purpose vehicles, which will be established as 50:50 joint ventures between the Union and the respective State Government. The Union Government will invest an estimated ₹5 lakh crore (US$70 billion).
In a new draft policy unveiled in March 2017, the Central Government stated that it wanted state governments to consider metro rail as the “last option” and implement it only after considering all other possible mass rapid transit systems.
The decision was taken due to the high cost of constructing metro rail systems. In August 2017, the Union Government announced that it would not provide financial assistance to the new metro rail project unless some sort of private partnership is involved. In some of the cities, the construction work for phase II will be starting soon.

- Presently in 2018, the Metro rail is operating in 10 cities of Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Chennai, Lucknow, Kochi, Hyderabad, Jaipur, and Gurgaon. Twelve more cities are going to see the arrival of the Metro in the near future. Private estimates show currently Metro projects of more than Rs 2 trillion are under approval in 15 cities.
- India is amongst the 55 countries that have a Metro rail network. However, its share in the global rail network is currently limited to only three percent.
- Kolkata was the first city to see the arrival of the Metro. Work on the country’s first Metro started in 1972 while operations have begun in 1984.
- India’s first modern Metro network, The Delhi Metro has begun operations in 2002, is the fourth-largest Metro network in the world after Shanghai, Beijing, and London.
- 15% commuters in Delhi use the Metro while the global average is 16 percent. In other cities, the Metro’s role as the main transporter has yet to gain significance.

Bangalore Metro, christened as “Namma Metro”, not only adds to the beauty of Bangalore skyline but immensely adds to the comfort level of travel. Besides this, Namma Metro is a major environment-friendly addition to Bangalore City as it significantly contributes to the reduction of carbon emissions.
The project has an East-West corridor – 18.10 km long, starting from Baiyappanahalli in the East and terminating at Mysore Road terminal in the West and a 24.20 km North-South corridor commencing at Nagasandra in the North and terminating at Puttenahalli in the South. Phase-1 Project Length 42.30 km: work has been completed and fully operational from 17.06.2017.
This is the First Metro rail project in India commissioned with 750V DC Third Rail on Standard Guage.

India’s first public-private partnership(PPP) metro system with the Reliance group. MML-3 is a 33.5 km long underground corridor running along Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ. The length of the corridor is marked with 27 key stations out of which 26 will be underground and 1 in grade.

On 4th February 2010, a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) namely, Metro-Link Express for Gandhinagar & Ahmedabad (MEGA) Company Ltd. was incorporated by the Government of Gujarat to implement Metro Rail Project under the Companies Act, 1956. The company was restructured and with effect from 20th March 2015 the Company has been converted as a 50: 50 SPV of Government of India and Government of Gujarat.
The total length of the Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project Phase-I is about 39.259 km out of which approximately 6 KM is underground and rest is elevated section. The project will connect 4 corners of the Ahmedabad city with 2 corridors and 32 stations.

The Navi Mumbai Metro is a rapid transit system under construction in the Indian city of Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra. The planning and construction of the Navi Mumbai Metro are being overseen by the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO).
