Top Online Learning Platforms to Learn Emerging Job Skills In 2024

Last Updated on October 16, 2024 by Admin

Online learning is education that takes place over the Internet. It is often referred to as “e-learning,” among other terms. However, online learning is just one type of distance learning, the umbrella term for any learning across distance and not in a traditional classroom. Education takes place online through computers and laptops or any digital mobile device. We discussed the top online learning platforms for emerging job skills in 2024.

Why Online Education?

As reported by Forbes, In academia, where time is measured not in years or months, but by terms, semesters, or trimesters, more and more institutions around the world are beginning to face the likelihood not just of finishing courses online — for which they were unprepared primarily when they started — but of having to start the next academic year under similar conditions.

At this point, 90% of students in developed countries are receiving classes online, with varying levels of excellence and satisfaction. However, things have changed significantly since March 2020, when schools’ lack of experience could be used as an excuse. Still, they now have a strategy and serious plans to ensure a good learning experience to prevent pupils from forming part lost generation.

As academic institutions navigate the transition to online education, a notable shift in course delivery is underway. Students, embracing remote learning, increasingly rely on online platforms not only to complete courses but also for the flexibility they provide to do coursework conveniently from home. This evolution highlights the growing importance of robust online learning tools in shaping the future of education.

Academic institutions will be obliged for a long time either to teach all their classes online or offer a valid and full alternative to all students who have to follow the classes from home.

Whether due to lockdown or social distancing, which will force a reduction in classroom size, everything indicates that academic activity will still take a long time to return to normal and may end up in a very different normal to before.

Types of Online Education

The following are the various types of online education currently going on all over the internet.

Online Learning

Online education refers to the idea of using online tools for learning. In online learning, the critical element is the use of the internet. An online course implies a distance between you and your teachers. Lectures, assignments, tests are all enabled by virtual platforms. A fully online university degree means you will not have to travel at all for your studies.

Blended Learning

Blended learning combines learning at a distance and traditional on-campus learning (in a classroom). You will have a (more or less) fixed schedule where you will have to attend a part of the classes on campus.

However, most courses will still be online, allowing you to do coursework and assignments online. Some universities offering blended learning are:

This type of degree is ideal if you want to also get to travel a bit and create relationships with colleagues and teachers through face-to-face interactions and networking.

e-Learning

E-learning typically refers to the online interaction between you as a student and the teacher. E-learning means you receive the training online, even though your teacher may be in the same building.

E-learning can be used in a classroom or an online setting. Additionally, it can be used to simulate and intensify work-based learning situations.

It’s probably your typical online learning platform that offers self-paced activities and games for kids to click through.

Virtual Learning

Similar to online learning, but perhaps a bit more formal, and incorporating internal software platforms/portals. With virtual learning, you take an in-person element and make it available online.

Remote Learning

Perhaps less applicable to kids and school? Less available to the general public and used more to describe particular programs reserved for a specific organization’s members. Traditionally more of a corporate training method. Organizations and educational institutions implement, either way, a more formal learning program.

On-demand Learning

As in “right now.” Some online learning can be on-demand, but not all. For instance, you might have to schedule an online learning session a week out or a day in advance, where a true on-demand product, say, like your cable streaming, can be more “click and you’re off.”

Distance Learning

Distance learning does seem to describe more of a “separation” between teacher and student in terms of when and how often they interact. Most similar to remote learning, or at least Google seems to connect the two as synonyms closely. That doesn’t mean they are the same, but just an observation.

Distance learning is understood and is often used as a synonym with online learning. Why the different wording? It’s because it was initially introduced to attract students from all over the world.

This is how it became possible for students from Europe to quickly attend an American college and become international students without needing to travel.

Types of Online Courses

The Flipped Course

This is perhaps the most common course type out there and most content creators tend to design their curriculum to fit this mold.

In most cases, the flipped course is similar to a typical real-world classroom lecture but with a twist. The real-world counterpart spends 90% of the time discussing the subject, and 10% is left to classroom interactions; the scheme is reversed in the flipped course hence the term.

Face to Face

This format is the most similar to a real-world classroom setting. You and your students will meet “face to face” via a virtual classroom or online campuses or whatever similar tool that the platforms you are part of will call them.

The teaching method here is also quite similar, you spend the rest of the class teaching the module while activities are interspersed from time to time to keep your students engaged.

The Hybrid Course

Also known as the Blended Course, the Hybrid Course takes parts from both the Flipped and Face to Face courses to come up with something unique.

Traditional face-to-face instruction is still present but severely limited. This means that you can have more time dedicated to interacting with students and addressing whatever issue they might have with the course.

Web-Based

Another popular online course format, this course type, takes full use of the tools readily provided for you at any of the various online course platforms. You publish your course, which can come in multiple media at a localized virtual clipboard and assignments and quizzes.

The students can then access these files at any time and finish the course at their own pace. Direct interaction with your students might be limited, but this gives you more time to address issues students might have with your course personally, improve on the details of each module, or build a new course from scratch.

Peer Instruction

A new concept from Harvard, this form of online course instruction is unique and requires no interaction for you and your students. All you do is post the course syllabus with the details of the module on a virtual clipboard, and It will be the students themselves who will discuss for themselves the details of the subject in a forum-style medium. The absence of an authority figure can make students all the more comfortable and your course all the more appealing.

Web-Enhanced

A hybrid of the Web-based and Face-to-Face models, the Web-enhanced format allows you to meet your class at an allotted time and date to discuss the critical points. Like the face-to-face model, you can remotely interact with your students by asking them questions and answering theirs.

However, there will be components to your course that will be available to students 24/7, giving them enough time to catch up (especially during times of poor Internet connection). This means that students still have the option to finish the course at their own pace.

MOOC

MOOC stands for a Massive Open Online Course. It is an online course aimed at large-scale participation and open (free) access via the internet. They are similar to university courses but do not tend to offer academic credit.

Known formally as the Massive Open Online Course, the MOOC is ideal for courses that target large classes like that in a typical university classroom. This model is best for university professors who want to transition to a virtual channel with their instructions fully.

Some platforms encourage course creators to design their courses to accommodate a classroom setting that more than 50 people can fill up at once.

As of now, MOOC students still do not receive credit for taking the course. Still, the platform has successfully let them learn something new and is an accessible medium for experienced professors to take advantage of.

A number of web-based platforms supported by top universities and colleges offer MOOCs in a wide range of subjects. i.e., edx, Coursera, FutureLearn, etc., are examples of MOOCs.
