The Maharashtra cabinet has recently approved a concession agreement for the Rs 46,000 crore Mumbai-Nagpur Super Communication Expressway which is also known as Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg. The construction of the 700-km long 8-lane Expressway is divided into 16 packages out of which the bidding process of three packages s underway.

It is expected that the expressway will help to cut short the travelling time between Mumbai to Nagpur to approximately 8 to 9 hours. Currently it takes 15 to 16 hours to travel from Mumbai to Nagpur so this project will almost cut the travelling time by half. The expressway will pass through 10 districts, 26 sub districts or tehsils and 392 villages and it will connect Mumbai with Thane, Nashik, Bhiwandi, Aurangabad, Washim, Buldhana, Akola, Amravati, Wardha and Nagpur. Once the companies get green signal to start the construction, it will become a largest highway project in India.
According to Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg website, the state has so far acquired 80% (both government land as well as private land) of the 9,900 hectares or 24,255 acres of land required for the expressway. A total compensation of Rs 4,788 crore was paid during this land acquisition process.
Benefits of Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg:
- The expressway will help to connect Mumbai JNPT with Nagpur Mihan
- Twenty plus Krushi Samruddhi Kendra (new towns), equipped with modern amenities, agro based industries and a commercial hub will be developed at the intersections.
- Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg will be an entirely Greenfield project.
- It will have a speed limit of 150 km which will bring Nagpur and Mumbai within 8 hours reach. Thus, travel time from Mumbai to Aurangabad will be 4 hours and from Aurangabad to Nagpur, another 4 hours.
- It will connect several industrial areas, the Delhi – Mumbai Industrial Mahamarg (DMIC), the Western Dedicated Freight Mahamarg (WDFC), dry ports of Wardha and Jalna and Mumbai’s JNPT.
- It will have around 50+ flyovers, 24+ interchanges, 5+ tunnels, 400+ vehicular and 300+ pedestrian underpasses provided at strategic locations.

According to Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg website, The proposed project completion date is October 2019.
